Shoulder pain: orthopedic evaluation by video call
The shoulder is the most mobile joint in the body, which also makes it prone to pain and injury. If it's hard to lift your arm, sleep on that side, or play your sport, I can help. I'm Dr. Jaime Ulloa Gil, an orthopedist and traumatologist with a focus on sports medicine, offering virtual consults in Costa Rica.
Common problems I evaluate
Rotator cuff tendinitis and tears
Shoulder impingement (subacromial pain)
Shoulder bursitis
Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis)
Shoulder instability or repeated dislocations
Shoulder pain from wear and tear (osteoarthritis)
What a virtual consult can do for you
Take a detailed history and understand how the pain affects your activities.
Perform a guided physical exam by video to assess range of motion and strength.
Review your X-rays, ultrasound, MRI, and previous reports.
Give you a working diagnosis and a treatment plan.
Recommend exercises and guide your rehabilitation.
Order imaging or refer you when needed.
Some cases need an in-person exam or additional imaging. If yours does, I'll let you know and advise you on how to arrange it.
How to prepare
Have your imaging and prior medical reports ready.
Wear comfortable clothing, such as a tank top, so the shoulder can be seen.
Choose a quiet, well-lit space with room to move your arms.
Check that your camera, microphone, and internet connection work.
When to seek urgent in-person care
Go to an emergency service right away or call 911 if you have: a visible deformity or suspected dislocation after a fall or blow; inability to move the arm after an injury; a hot, red shoulder with fever; numbness, weakness, or coldness in the arm; or left shoulder or arm pain with chest pain, shortness of breath, or sweating, which may be a heart problem.
