Knee pain or injury: virtual consult with an orthopedist
Your knees carry much of your body weight and take part in almost everything you do: walking, climbing stairs, running, or playing sports. When a knee hurts, swells, or "gives way," daily life suffers. I'm Dr. Jaime Ulloa Gil, an orthopedist and traumatologist with a focus on sports medicine, and I see patients by video call anywhere in Costa Rica, including expats and visitors.
Common problems I evaluate
Knee pain from wear and tear (osteoarthritis)
Meniscus tears
Ligament injuries, such as the ACL or collateral ligaments
Pain at the front of the knee (patellofemoral pain)
Patellar tendinitis or tendinopathy
Swelling, fluid, or a feeling of instability after a twist
What a virtual consult can do for you
Take a careful history: how the pain started, what makes it worse, and what you've tried.
Perform a guided physical exam by video, with simple movements you do in front of the camera.
Review your X-rays, MRI, ultrasound, and previous reports.
Give you a working diagnosis and a clear treatment plan.
Guide your exercises and rehabilitation.
Order imaging or refer you to another specialist when needed.
Some cases need an in-person exam or additional imaging. If yours does, I'll tell you clearly and help you arrange the next steps.
How to prepare
Have your imaging (X-rays, MRI, ultrasound) and prior medical reports ready.
Wear comfortable clothing, such as shorts, so the knee can be seen.
Choose a quiet, well-lit space with room to stand and take a few steps.
Check that your camera, microphone, and internet connection work.
When to seek urgent in-person care
Go to an emergency service right away or call 911 if you have: an obvious deformity or open wound after an injury; inability to put weight on the leg after an injury; a very swollen, hot, red knee with fever; pain and swelling in the calf; or a cold, pale, or numb foot.
