Hip pain: virtual consult with an orthopedist
Hip pain can be felt in the groin, the side of the hip, or the buttock, and it can make walking, sitting, or sleeping difficult. Understanding where it comes from is the first step to treating it. I'm Dr. Jaime Ulloa Gil, an orthopedist and traumatologist with a focus on sports medicine, and I see patients by video call in Costa Rica.
Common problems I evaluate
Hip pain from wear and tear (osteoarthritis)
Trochanteric bursitis (pain on the side of the hip)
Gluteal tendinopathy
Hip impingement (femoroacetabular impingement)
Hip labral tears
Groin and hip muscle strains in active people
What a virtual consult can do for you
Go over your history, symptoms, and how they affect your daily life.
Perform a guided physical exam by video, including how you walk and how your hip moves.
Review your X-rays, MRI, and previous reports.
Give you a working diagnosis and a treatment plan.
Guide your exercises and rehabilitation.
Order imaging or refer you when needed.
Some cases need an in-person exam or additional imaging. If yours does, I'll tell you and help you with the next steps.
How to prepare
Have your imaging and prior medical reports ready.
Wear comfortable clothing, such as shorts or workout clothes, so hip movement can be seen.
Choose a quiet, well-lit space with room to walk a few steps and, if possible, lie down.
Check that your camera, microphone, and internet connection work.
When to seek urgent in-person care
Go to an emergency service right away or call 911 if: after a fall you can't stand up or put weight on the leg, especially if you are older; the leg looks shorter or turned outward; you have severe hip pain with fever; or a child is limping or refusing to walk and has a fever.
